The Ground Takes Over Hutzlers

February 20, 2017

The Contemporary has taken over the Hutzlers Building to present one of the most interesting exhibits to arrive in Baltimore.

The Ground, by Michael Jones McKean, takes full advantage of the historic space. If you haven't been in the Hutzler's building since it closed then this is your opportunity to see how art, architecture, history and contemporary thinking play off and complement each other.   Read a full description here.

The opening reception was a clear demonstration that the Bromo District has the physical assets, public loyalty and spirit to be the City's Premier Arts and Entertainment Destination. More than 1,000 people came to Howard Street by foot, by car, by transit and by Uber. This incredible art show makes impact in downtown and inspired the minds of all who attended.

Throughout his career, McKean has explored the nature of objects in relation to folklore, technology, anthropology, and mysticism. His complex installations and sculptures have merged expansive but highly specific orderings of materials, processes, and substances. McKean was born in Micronesia in 1976 and lives and works in New York City and Richmond, Virginia where he teaches in the Sculpture + Extended Media Department at Virginia Commonwealth University. He has been the recipient of many awards including a Guggenheim Fellowship, a Nancy Graves Foundation Award and an Artadia Award.

The show is open through May 19th! Get there!
