Annex Produces First Theater at Le Mondo!

April 24, 2017

The Annex Theater takes on an especially important topic in their next production.  Plus, this will be the first theater produced in Le Mondo home on Howard Street.

This original play is about the lives, dreams and deprivations of the formally homeless writer, Housing Right Advocate Anthony Williams.  Adapted from the writer's journals by company member Ren Pepitone, this will be the first Theater production in the new Le Mondo space!

The King of Howard Street is an ensemble-based, new theater piece. Startingly beautiful, poetic, and achingly real - the play is derived from the true-life experiences of Williams and others currently living within the homeless populations of downtown Baltimore's Howard Street.

Anthony, now past 60, and native to Baltimore, is determined to make a better life for himself. He’s seeing a therapist, kicked drugs, and applied for Section 8 housing. For now he’s squatting downtown, and trying to take care of himself, the abandoned building, and a coterie of friends who depend on him. In the face of poverty, addiction, abuse, gang violence, city mismanagement, and the biggest snowfall on record, Anthony shoulders the weight of his friends’ survival. Told through first-hand accounts interwoven with myth and history, urban and magical realism, tragedy and absurdity, Anthony advocates for himself and the Baltimore homeless community–knowing all the while that not everybody makes it.

Thursdays - Saturdays, May 18 - June 4, 8PM, $15.
